Morgan M restaurant review

platesspritzers100Morgan M is a restaurant on Liverpool Road, Islington .  It offers a high calibre of food, wine and presentation in a pleasant atmosphere.  Unfortunately they gave my companion food poisoning.

I wrote to them several times - before and after extensive allergy tests and medical consultation.  I can recommend you go, but only to look at the food,  as it is beautifully presented, but not to risk eating it.

I wrote again after allergy tests had been completed, which showed it had not been an allergic reaction, but I again received no reply.

My review of it is, therefore as bittersweet as chocolate mousse on the way back up.

The food was splendid to look at, if teetering on the unjustifiably expensive.

Among some delicately imagined dishes, my lamb was actually rather gristly, but there were some nice flourishes in each dish.

Unfortunately my companion became violently ill shortly after eating the seafood cappucino.  She (a lifelong pescatarian) has since had extensive allergy testing and we have absolutely ruled out any allergic reaction.

Apart from the food poisoning (which in all fairness there is a small chance may have been caused by something other than this meal) the wine list is good, the service attentive and slightly snobbish, which some people enjoy, the menu inventive and the chef evidently talented.

Explosive vomiting is a small price to pay to enjoy such delights.  The bill, on the other hand, won't be.

Below is the email letter I initially sent. To which I received no reply.

We came to the restaurant on 13th Feb, 7.45, we ordered the winter menu each, and the food appeared excellent, and was very attractively presented and thoughtfully created. I have to write to say that my companion, after the course of scallops in a seafood cappuccino, started a little afterwards to complain of feeling hot. Then, shortly after this she began to feel nauseous. She then, shortly after this, proceeded to vomit.

After which she felt marginally better, but obviously she could not eat the courses that followed, though she tried to - not wanting to spoil what was meant to be a special evening. we wavered between leaving there and then, or trying to persevere in the hope that it would pass.

I am trying to be measured and not be accusatory outright, because all though she is a pescatarian and has eaten seafood and shellfish all her life, I know that allergies can sometimes be peculiar things.

However, the nature of her symptoms and the rapidity of their onset do strongly suggest that she was given food poisoning at your restaurant. Possibly by a rogue scallop. I will not be vulgar, but the evidence is in the nature of her reaction. This I have gleaned from discussion with a lawyer friend who fortunately has ample experience in exactly these matters and from medical consultation.

I thought it fair to contact you in the first instance with feedback, to tell you of our experience.

She spent the entire rest of the night vomiting at approximately half hourly intervals, and did not get to sleep at any point, the next couple of days she still felt ill and is just about recovered now but is still poorly.

I am sorry to have to write this to you, but our experience was marred by what may well have been bad luck in terms of the seafood.

The fact is that my companion became terribly ill in the restaurant and the timing and symptoms are highly indicative of food poisoning.

I respectfully await your reply.
